When Worlds Collide: Unbroken Bonds in Happy Valley

Everyone who knew Hayley knew her heart was set on attending Penn State University.  She grew up going to games with her brother, wandering through town, and savoring scoops of ice cream from the famous Creamery.  Penn State wasn’t just a dream school for her-it was a place that felt like home.

Each year, PSU students come together for THON, a student-run fundraiser dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer.  Since it’s start in 1973, THON has grown into a powerful movement of hope, strength and community.

This year, a few of Hayley’s friends-Sara, Griffin & Grace-are at Happy Valley, and all three are participating in THON.  Sara and Griffin are serving on the committee that helps run the event.  They knew Hayley well, and they know firsthand the heartbreak of losing a friend to childhood cancer.

Sara reached out recently, hoping to share the message of Hayley’s Sunshine.  She wrote: “I know Hayley’s love for Penn State was strong.  We often question what it would be like if she was at Penn State with us right now.  However, we have the three of us and a community of thousands of volunteers passionate about childhood cancer.  If she can’t be here, at least we can know we can keep her memory alive and spread her love”

What a beautiful tribute to our Hayley-from these three and countless others who are dancing, volunteering, and fighting for a cure.  No child should suffer from cancer, and no parent should ever have to watch their child endure it.  We stand with Sara, Griffin, Grace, and the incredible PSU students dedicating their time, energy, and “dancing feet” to make sure that one day, no family has to face this battle.
